Weekend Things to Do in Ahmedabad for Young Professionals

After a long week on SG Highway or in GIFT City, the last thing you want is another weekend scrolling at home. Ahmedabad has a lot more to do than people think — here is a mix of free, cheap and social ideas, sorted by time of day.

Saturday morning

• Riverfront walk or cycle. The Sabarmati Riverfront is at its best early in the morning. Walk across Atal Bridge and grab breakfast nearby.
• Old City heritage walk. The early-morning heritage walk through the pols starts near the Swaminarayan temple in Kalupur — carved wooden houses, hidden temples and stories of the walled city.
• Gandhi Ashram. Peaceful, free and right on the river near Vadaj.

Saturday afternoon

• Museums. Sanskar Kendra in Paldi, the Auto World vintage car museum, or a few hours at Gujarat Science City.
• Workshops. Pottery, painting, baking and photography workshops run most weekends in west Ahmedabad — great for meeting people with the same interests.
• Shopping streets. CG Road and the stalls around Law Garden.

Saturday evening

• Café streets. Sindhu Bhavan Road and Judges Bungalow Road are lively from 7 pm.
• Lakefronts. Vastrapur Lake or Kankaria Lakefront for an evening walk and street food.

• Manek Chowk. The Old City square turns into a famous food market late in the evening.

Seasonal highlights

Navratri (garba every night for nine nights), Uttarayan on 14 January (terrace kite flying everywhere), the Kankaria Carnival in late December and the Riverfront flower show in winter are the biggest social moments of the Ahmedabad year.
