Meeting Someone From an App? 15 Safety Tips Before, During and After

Before you meet someone from an app: how to verify them, pick a safe place, protect your phone, OTPs and money, and what to do if something feels wrong.

Most people you meet online are exactly who they say they are. But a few simple habits protect you from the small number who are not — and they make the first meeting more relaxed for both of you. These tips apply to any app or website, including Stranger Meet.

Before you meet

  1. Chat on the platform first. Keep the conversation inside the app until you feel comfortable. Platforms can act on reports; random messaging apps cannot.
  2. Look for verification. On Stranger Meet, the verified badge means a moderator checked a live selfie. Be careful with profiles that refuse any kind of verification.
  3. Do a quick video call. Two minutes on video confirms the person matches their photos.
  4. Keep personal details private. Don't share your home address, office name, or family details yet. Your username is enough.
  5. Never share OTPs, UPI PINs or passwords. No genuine person needs them. Anyone asking for money, gift cards, "help with a fee" or investment advice is a red flag.

Choosing the place

  1. Meet in a busy public place. A café, mall food court, lakefront or the riverfront in daylight or early evening. See our first-meetup spots in Ahmedabad.
  2. Use your own transport. Don't accept a pick-up from home for a first meeting, and keep money for a cab back.
  3. Tell a friend. Share who you are meeting, where and when. Share your live location for the duration.
  4. Keep it short. A 45-minute coffee is a perfect first meeting. You can always plan a second one.

During the meeting

  1. Watch your drink and belongings. Order yourself, keep your drink with you, and keep your phone charged.
  2. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
  3. Stay in public. Don't move to a private place on a first meeting, however friendly it feels.

After the meeting

  1. Text your friend that you are home.
  2. Report bad behaviour. Harassment, pressure or requests for money should be reported on the platform — on Stranger Meet, reports are confidential and reviewed by a moderator.
  3. Block freely. Blocking is instant and the other person is not told why.

Helplines in India

  • 112 — national emergency number (police, ambulance, fire).
  • 181 — women helpline (Abhayam in Gujarat).
  • 1930 — cyber crime and online fraud helpline; you can also report at cybercrime.gov.in.

How Stranger Meet helps

Every member verifies their e-mail and mobile number, and selfie verification is checked by a real moderator. Only usernames are public — real names, phone numbers and e-mails are never shown. Events are held at public venues with a guest list. Read more in our Safety Centre, then join free when you are ready.
