Going to a Social Event Alone in Ahmedabad: A First-Timer's Guide

Nervous about walking into a meetup alone? What to expect, how to start conversations, what to wear and how to leave gracefully — from people who do it every week.

Walking into a room full of strangers on your own is one of the most common fears there is — and one of the most rewarding to beat. At Stranger Meet events most guests arrive alone, so you will not be the only one. Here is how to make your first solo event easy.

Pick the right first event

Start small. A café meetup, a games night or a group dinner is easier than a big DJ night because you can actually talk. Check the upcoming events and look for words like "newcomers", "mixer" or "meetup". The meetups and dinners categories are good starting points.

Before you go

  • Join the event chat. Saying a quick hello in the event group before the day means you will recognise a few faces.
  • Plan your transport both ways, and keep your phone charged.
  • Dress for the venue. Smart-casual works for almost everything in Ahmedabad; the event page will mention a theme or dress code if there is one.
  • Arrive on time. The first 20 minutes are the easiest time to meet people — groups haven't formed yet.

Starting conversations

You don't need clever lines. These work every time:

  • "Is this your first one too?"
  • "How did you hear about this?"
  • "Which part of Ahmedabad are you from?"
  • "What do you usually do on weekends?"

Look for people standing alone or in groups of three (pairs are often already deep in conversation). Ask the host to introduce you — that is literally their job.

Keeping it going

Ask follow-up questions, share a little about yourself, and don't worry about silences. If a conversation runs out, it's fine to say "I'm going to grab a drink, great meeting you" and move on.

Leaving gracefully

You can leave whenever you want. If you enjoyed talking to someone, send a friend request on the app rather than asking for a phone number — it keeps your number private.

Our community rules are simple: be kind, take no for an answer, no pressure and no harassment. Hosts and moderators remove anyone who breaks them. See the community guidelines.
